Tanzania has one of the lowest per capita income rates in the world, and it depends heavily on agriculture to support a population of more than 48 million people. Despite progress in recent years due to tourism and increased production and export of natural gas and minerals, a significant portion of the population still lives below the poverty line and lacks access to basic financial services.
Since first providing support to African microfinance institutions in 2000, Accion has expanded its operations to provide industry training and technical assistance programs in Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria and Tanzania. In 2002, Accion began working with Akiba Commercial Bank, providing a wide range of technical and management services to the institution. Accion Investments also complemented the technical assistance with an investment of U.S. $2.5 million as part of a capitalization program.
