While Peru is rich in natural resources, approximately one fourth of its population lives below the poverty line. The country’s labor force is heavily concentrated in the service sector, and access to financial services is limited, with only about 20 percent of the population holding an account at a financial institution.
Accion has been working to strengthen microfinance in Peru with partner Mibanco since 1998. Mibanco is the first for-profit, fully-regulated commercial bank in the country dedicated to microenterprise. Since 2008, Accion and Mibanco have been developing strategies and best practices for bringing microfinance services to remote, rural areas in Latin America.
Accion currently provides partner Mibanco with ongoing technical assistance toward the development of new products and services.
