Panama’s service-based economy has experienced continued growth in previous years thanks to investment in large infrastructure projectss and the expansion of the Panama Canal. While ongoing economic prosperity has reduced the number of people living below the poverty line overall, approximately a fourth of the total population still is affected by poverty. Additionally, the country has the second worst income distribution in Latin America.
In 2006, Accion embarked on a partnership with Banco Delta to strengthen microfinance in Panama. Banco Delta was only the second bank in the country to dedicate itself entirely to the financial needs of Panama's microentrepreneurs. Through the partnership, Banco Delta and Accion have worked to develop operational systems for the effective delivery of microfinance products.
